My question involves criminal law for the state of: IL
My friend was arrested recently here in CO. From what I understand he had a warrant out of Cook County, IL for his arrest, and extradition for a probation violation. His formal charge was possession of a controlled substance, resulting in his being sentenced to probation. Where things get complicated and the problems begin, is the courts decision to even sentence him to probation. Reason being, his not even being a resident of Cook County, and he was only there due to a work related job. His permanent state of residence at the time was TX, at the time he was married and has a child. Apparently, his probation officer was unable for some reason or another, was unable to transfer his probation to the state of TX. So he made the decision to violate the terms of his probation. He is orginally from Colorado and came here over a year ago for family reasons. I really want to help him out as much as possible, but I don't know where to begin? I live in CO, and have no clue about Attorneys in Chicago, IL? Is a probation violation in IL a misdeamenor or felony? Should I call his probation officer? How do I get copies of his court documents? Any advice or help is greatly appreciated! Thanks again
