    Default Emancipation for College

My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Florida.

Hi! I'm asking this question on behalf of my 21-year-old boyfriend. He currently lives with his parents and will continue to live with them while attending college as a transfer junior in the spring. However, this prevents him from being able to get financial aid because his parents' income is such that he does not qualify. His parents do not, though, help at all in paying his tuition. So my question is, would it be beneficial to him to attempt legal emancipation so that he will qualify for greater financial aid, as he is not financially capable of paying for college now? And if so, how should he go about doing this?

Thank you all for your time!

    Default Re: Emancipation for College

Your boyfriend already is emancipated - he became so upon attaining his 18th birthday. The FAFSA considerations for emancipated minors applies only to those students who legally obtained relief from the disabilities of minority prior to the age of 18 - there is no "expected family contribution" because they've been legally and financially independent from their families since age 16 or so.

He will need to discuss options with his school's financial aid office, or postpone college until he reaches the age of 24 or gets married.
