Default Upfront Payment of Yearly Union Dues

    In Massachusetts

Have been offered a position after having been out of work for a while (Hooray). Now have been told that before I can begin working I MUST pay the entire year's worth of union dues before I can begin. Obviously money is short after unemployment, can the union require this as a stipulation of beginning work in the state of Massachusetts.

Additional Info: Am only being offered two partial work days in the first two weeks of employment and the dues being asked for will completely eat the anticipated pay for those two partial days. Was told that I needed to pay with cash or check before starting.

Not a positive or definate answer for you but I believe if they require that of all union members, they can demand it from you. If they do not require it of all members, then I do not believe they can demand it from you.

You might want to check with the NRLB. Would seem to me that this would be forcing you to pay union dues for periods when you could possibly be no longer employed there.
