Question U.S. Citizen Marrying Canadian on NAFTA Visa

I am a U.S. citizen by birth. My fiance is from Canada and has lived in the states legally for over a decade. We are planning a large wedding for May of next year, but his NAFTA visa expires in June.

    My understanding is:
    1) We cannot start the paperwork for his marriage-based green card until we are already married.
    2) The paperwork takes 3-6 months to be processed.
    3) He will be ineligible to renew his NAFTA visa once we start the process for his marriage-based green card.

First off, is my understanding correct? Secondly, how do we ensure that his green card is approved before his visa expires?

    Thanks
    A.B.
