My question involves unemployment benefits for the state of: California
I was laid off 1/08 and went on a claim, then the CA extension, then went on two federal extensions.
In January 09, when my claim was up, I called EDD regarding the 2nd extension and they stated that I could only get this if I didn't qualify for a new claim, the person I was speaking with then stated that they were putting in the system that I was not eligible so that I would receive my extension. I collected on this extension. I then received a notice of unemployment insurance reward for a new claim in April. This was also around the time that my extension was up. I called EDD and they told me that I will collect on the last FED extension and then after that ran out I would collect on my new claim. I talked to two different people and they both told me the same thing. I believed them (unfortunately!) and went on the 3rd extension, thinking that I would be able to collect on my new claim when the extension was up.
My extension ended 2 weeks ago and I began trying to call EDD regarding my new claim (it took until today to get through). They then told me that I do not have another claim, I was misinformed and that I cannot collect on it. They then stated that the award letter went out to many people "on accident" and also that in January they should have put me on the new claim rather than the extension, but that there was nothing they could do now.
I was eligible for a new claim and it was my understanding that you could collect on that claim before the ending date. I have the claim right in front of me as well.
I am looking for any advice on what I should do. I am very frustrated with this and don't understand how they can say I don't have a claim when it is right here, or deny me these benefits when they are valid.
My boyfriend was laid off at the same time, and the exact same thing has happened with him.
Thank you for any help you can give!
