Default Office Salary Workers Forced to Work Hourly Jobs

My question involves employment and labor law for the state of: Indiana.

My company has instituted a policy requiring Salary (Office) workers to perform hourly (Shop floor) jobs on the weekend with no compensation. Is this legal?

    Thanks,
    TT.

It is legal to require you to do any task that is not unsafe or illegal.

Whether or not you must be paid for the extra time is not a function of your pay method (salaried or hourly) but your exempt status (exempt or nonexempt). "Salaried" and "exempt" are not interchangeable terms. Even if exempt, one day a week of "shop tasks" would not invalidate the exempt status.

    PattyPA,

Even if exempt, one day a week of "shop tasks" would not invalidate the exempt status.
Even if the "shop tasks" took place during overtime? I mean after a full 5 day work week of 40+ hrs.

    Thanks for the quick reply,
    TT

If you are an exempt employee, then there is no such thing as "overtime" for you. The number of hours, or days, worked by an exempt employee is legally meaningless.

    So yes, even if.
