I lived/worked overseas from 2002 to just last month with the last 2.5 years as a GS civilian with the military. In 2007 when I transferred to Germany I puchased a car from an active duty member. We went thru all the paperwork there on base to transfer the car to me. Being military overseas, there is no tax paid on any purchase.
I moved back to Texas this month and am being told by the Tax Assessor/Car registration that I must pay sales tax on this car I bought in 2007 in order to get Texas plates. They are already charging me $90 extra as a new resident to Texas even though I lived in Texas 1962 thru 2002.
I find it hard to believe that every returning person in the military community will have to pay Texas state sales tax on cars bought overseas from other military members or from the on-base Ford/Chevy dealers
Can you confirm.
