    Default Penalty for Stolen Property

    My question involves criminal law for the state of: Maryland
    "When value of the property is under $500, penalty Maximum—18 months; Fine—$500."
    When 500$ and when 18 months? From what depend the penalty solution?
    What the mast posible penalty for me if i'm first time stolen, i'm not USA resident, i'm 22, i'm stolen for 243$? Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    When the penalty for a crime is described as up to 18 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $500, that means you can be sentenced to up to 18 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $500 (plus other court assessments). If you have no prior record, you're most likely to get probation - but it sounds like you may have immigration issues to worry about, so I suggest consulting a lawyer.
