    Default Alcoholic Parent in Recovery

My question involves a child visitation case from the State of: Ohio

I have not seen my son, who is 4 years old, for about one year, and have been separated from his mother for 3 years.

My ex-girlfriend will not let me see him because I am an alcoholic, and she is with a new guy who she wants to be his new dad, which I can't really blame her for. I have tried to talk to her but she refuses to even consider visitation, and has made it clear she doesnm't want me in his life..

The thing is during the last year, I have turned my life around. I have been in treatment, I am in AA, I have a therapist, and I am enrolled in school majoring in Social Work, and I really believe I can be a positive influence in my sons life.

I can't afford a lawyer, so I was thinking about filing for visitation rights myself. I'm just afraid that the judge will deny it because I'm an alcoholic, and I will never see my son again.

I'm trying to do the right thing, and I miss my son.

Do the paperwork! Courts LIKE to keep parents involved and responsible for their children.

The worst thing that you can get is supervised visitation, but if you don't have a record, it's all your words against hers...
Good job that you are turning your life around; many parents I've known of don't care because they figure they will see their child anyways...
    Keep up the good work!!!

Thumbs down Re: Alcoholic Parent in Recovery

I think it would be supervised visitation, I have a couple of DUI's, and I made a suicide attempt toward the end of my drinking. Although my therapist says I am at no risk to myself or my child, I'm sure she will raise the issue.

    What a mess huh!!

I think I need to have faith in the system, because it is the happiness of my son I am concerned about, and I'm sure the Courts will make the right decision.

All I can do is be honest, and hope I am doing the right thing. I created this situation so whatever I need to do to make it right I will.

What's so bad about that? Then he can build his parenting skills slowly and his child will get used to being around a new person. I think it would be wonderful.

I think that was said in the sense of "the least favorable result that's likely to follow", not in the sense that it would be a terrible thing.

Isn't that the strictest visitation plan? That's all I was saying, nothing bad if he's "sick"
