My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Massachusetts
My situation is quite complicated.
I used to go to a private boarding school, during which period I was a minor of course. I am a US citizen, my parents are not, so I was boarding in this school. I had to go the emergency room one time because I severely injured my elbow, and I received treatments including a surgery.
I did NOT sign any forms (and couldn't have, I was 16).
A teacher that lived in my dormitory signed forms, but I'm not
really sure if he's my technical legal guardian, or not.
They haven't sent the billing to a collection agency yet.
Am I responsible for this? My parents weren't even in the country,
and I was a minor, and my teacher (or i guess my school) signed the medical forms. What should I do about the medical billing?
Also, the bill was around $20,000.00, and the school insurance
covered 8000 dollars. So the remaining bill is ~$12,000.00.
What happens if my teacher wasn't my legal guardian?
and what happens if he was my legal guardian?
It's been a couple of years since the surgery, and now I'm 18 and worried.
Thanks.
