My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: New York

I bought a vehicle one year ago - August 2008. The previous owner signed the back of the title, I countersigned and brought all of the appropriate documents to the DMV, registered the car, surrendered that title, and took my plates (in August). When I received the title in the mail, the title was dated 9/3/08 (according to the DMV, basically the date they process the paperwork). BUT they also say that I owned the car between 8/6 and 9/3 (since the previous title was "assigned" to me)...

I am now being asked to prove that I've owned the car for the past year (cash for clunkers), and the dealership is saying that according to the title records, I have not been the owner for a full year yet...

Is this true? Is there any way to prove that I've been the owner since August when I surrendered the original title and registered the car? Carfax even has "new owner reported" on the earlier date...but the (the dealer) are still sticking to this September date on the title history saying it does not prove that I've owned the car since August....

Or do I really just need to wait another 3 weeks...

Thanks!
