Default Can My Employer Require Me to Pay for My Uniform

I work in Missouri. My employer has recently decided to require us to wear a specific uniform from a specific company at my expense. Is this legal?

Yes, it is. There is no law requiring an employer to provide your uniform, even if the employer requires a specific kind.

However, the cost of the uniform cannot take you below minimum wage if the clothing is specific enough to be considered a "uniform" and cannot be worn as regular street clothes.

    Per Mo. DOL:
Q: Can deductions be made from an employee′s paycheck?

A: Yes, but any deduction can not take a covered employee′s wages below the state hourly minimum wage rate.

Assuming that someone has enough other items to make itemization worthwhile, it can be a federal Schedule A deduction in all states.

Even though the thread is from 2009...

Want to work at Best Buy? You pay $20 for two Best Buy t-shirts.

Want to work X job? Buy Khaki's and a red shirt to work a seasonal Toys R Us job.
Want to work at Company B? Need black dress pants and a white collared shirt and non-slip shoes.

    Welcome to life

PS: I miss Patty. Hope she is at peace.
