Living in the US with German Debt
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My fiance is a US permenant resident that has lived here for two years, we plan to marry in two months. She was married when she emigrated, but shortly after arriving, her husband found an American girlfriend and they divorced here in the US, we are now looking into filing the proper paperwork so they will be divorced in Germany also. They left Germany with a joint account that has 27,000 in euro debt. The account has been paid for the last 3 years without a single missed payment, they have both agreed to each pay their respective halves and transfer the money into a German bank account were the account is drafted. Last month he said he can no longer pay his part and has stopped communication with her. We recently purchased a new home and at this point we cannot afford to pay the entire monthly payment. She has written the loan company and informed them that she can pay her part but no more, they have refused in writting and have threatened collection. We believe in paying back our debts and will in no way run from this. If legal action is taken, is there anyway that this can affect her immigration status, even if we are making a goodwill effort to repay the debt?
Thanks
