My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: New Jersey
I recently got a ticket for going the "wrong" way on a one way street (Title 39:4-85.1). This particular street has two end points and one entrance in the middle (see this picture: http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/1657/exhibita.png).
(Sorry for my poor drawing skills) The red, yellow, and orange lines is the path I took. The blue lines are the direction of the roads. The P-shield is where a police/parking enforcement is stationed.
The day after the incident, I visited the street to look for one-way signs. There were one-way signs posted at the exit points, but NOT in front of that middle street nor on the road itself. There were also NO left and right one way signs posted in front of that middle street. Apparently, drivers can make a left OR right from the middle street, but NOT travel to the opposite end from the same street. In my opinion, this makes no absolute sense since one way streets are supposed to be entirely ONE WAY, not split into two one way directions.
In my situation, I made a U-turn after I made a left (yellow path) when I realized that I was travelling the wrong way--I was looking for parking when I saw it was on the other side so I turned around. I had no prior knowledge of the split one way street. In addition, the ticketing officer did not explain to me, in detail, what I did wrong--just told me that I went the "wrong way" on a one way. She did not even tell me if I have to pay a fine, that I may be assessed 2 points, or that I need to go to court. There is not even a court date on the ticket for me to respond to the offense to the court. Like most people, I shut my mouth and did what I was told without arguing. I've been in the surrounding area since I started school, but I have not been to many side streets.
According to the NJ ticketing site (my ticket still unavailable online), I may be assessed 2 points on my record and a fine of about $85. This is my first ticket so, I have no idea how to proceed or what to do in court.
Is it worth it to contest the ticket? I am fearful of the court system since this is my first time and I really don't want to unless I will be given points. If I do need to go to court, what is the basic outline of the process or trial?
