    Unhappy Caught but Paid

My question involves criminal law for the state of: NJ

I was in a chain drug store and stupidly took an item that cost less than $2. I know this was incredibly wrong of me, unfair to the store, and have been crying over the situation since it happened. I was asked upon leaving to enter the office where they asked me questions about myself. I didn't have an id on me with a dob so i told them my birthday (I'm 20) and my name. I gave them my cousin's contact information because I don't live here, I'm visiting. They kept trying to call him, but he didn't pick up for some reason. In the end, I paid for the item and they allowed me to leave. I didn't sign any forms or meet the police. I paid for the item at the end. I didn't give an address because they only wanted cousin's address (which is out of state) which I had absolutely no idea of at the time. I called my cousin later to explain the situation, but he said he hadn't talked to them because he doesn't use the number I had given him anymore (apparently it was his old cell). I gave them my number, but they haven't contacted me since. Will they track me down since they have my name and dob? I'm so scared... I can't believe I did something so stupid and wrong.

    Unhappy Re: Caught but Paid

also, now that i've spent the last ten hours reading up on this (i'm so mad and disappointed with myself for being so stupid and wrong) I know for a fact that they never mentioned a Civil Demand to me and I did not sign anything. In fact, I wasn't even told what would happen, eventually he let me leave the store after paying for it. I'm scared and don't know what I should do. Would he have called the police on me??? I'm worried if I try to just let time take its course, I might be tracked down etc. and have to face huge punishments in the future. Or is there a chance that I could have evaded that because I was let go, not arrested, didn't sign any forms, didn't have an address to give him, and not told of the consequences. Please respond... I'm so scared and miserable.

They always could press charged,it sounds like they won't bother b.c it 2 dollars. If you didn't sign anything,if there was no camera, how are they gonna prove that you sold something. You most likely lucked out and avoid a civil demand and going to court. Some place will call the cops regardless just out of spite and for princpical.
