My question involves criminal law for the state of: NJ
I was in a chain drug store and stupidly took an item that cost less than $2. I know this was incredibly wrong of me, unfair to the store, and have been crying over the situation since it happened. I was asked upon leaving to enter the office where they asked me questions about myself. I didn't have an id on me with a dob so i told them my birthday (I'm 20) and my name. I gave them my cousin's contact information because I don't live here, I'm visiting. They kept trying to call him, but he didn't pick up for some reason. In the end, I paid for the item and they allowed me to leave. I didn't sign any forms or meet the police. I paid for the item at the end. I didn't give an address because they only wanted cousin's address (which is out of state) which I had absolutely no idea of at the time. I called my cousin later to explain the situation, but he said he hadn't talked to them because he doesn't use the number I had given him anymore (apparently it was his old cell). I gave them my number, but they haven't contacted me since. Will they track me down since they have my name and dob? I'm so scared... I can't believe I did something so stupid and wrong.
