Default Caught Shoplifting - Diversion Programs

My question involves criminal law for the state of: CONNECTICUT

I live in NY but I was caught shoplifting in CT. I am 18 years old and this is the first time I've ever been arrested. My court date is in 2 weeks and I definately need to not have this go on my record becuase I want to have a really good job one day, and I don't want this one stupid mistake to get in the way of that.

I was wondering if anyone could roughly estimate the likelihood that I would be able to get into some sort of diversion program or do something else that would prevent this from going on my record?

I plan to hire a lawyer, though I don't have a lot of money to spend on one. Will this help increase the chances of getting into a diversion program?

And before my court date, would it help at all to take an anti-theft class online, or do community service?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I would talk to a Criminal Defense attorney. Most have free consultations, bring in your list of questions.

Diversion programs, etc., vary upon things like any prior history you may have, your area.....

Lightbulb Re: Caught Shoplifting - Diversion Programs

I spoke to a lawyer, and he said that when i go to court I should try to apply for "accelerated rehabilitation." How likely is it that I get into this program if this is my first time being arrested and I'm 18? I was arrested for larceny 6th degree - which you can get 3 months in jail and a 500 dollar fine at worst. Does it make it worse that the store I stole from probably can show evidence that this was not my first time shoplifting?

The attorney also said that I don't need a lawyer when I go into court and ask for this program, but would having a lawyer with me increase my chances of getting in?

    Thanks
