    Unhappy Petty Theft Infraction

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

Hi, 3 years ago, I was caught shoplifting. I am very regretful and ashamed and afraid for my future. The judge orally amended my conviction to an infraction. My questions are, can infractions be expunged, or set aside? I am a graduate student, just one year shy of earning my MS in Counseling. I want to work with troubled, at-risk youth, but I am afraid my criminal background will keep me from getting jobs. What can I do? I have been told that infractions are offenses, and not convictions. I'm so worried. I was so stupid - this was my first and last time taking anything.

An infraction is not classified as a criminal conviction, and is not eligible for dismissal.

But I would still have to answer 'yes' if an application asks me if I have ever been convicted on a crime, right?
