    Exclamation Petty Theft Maryland

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Maryland

A bit ago, i was visiting my friends in OCMD at their condo. in the garage of the condo, on the side of a AC unit in the back we found two crab pots, on our way in, that we believed to either be the property of the condo, or abandoned by someone else. the next morning we baited One of them and put them in the bay not even 20 feet away from the condo in broad daylight. A man aporached us and agressivly asked if the crab pot belonged to us and in an effort to avoid confrontation, and also in a nervous state we said yes and walked away. we went to the beach only to return to cops at our condo asking about trash that had ended up on the balcony below us as well as who took the crab pot.

No one was charged with the trash only asked to remove it and we did. by the time we got in to the house everyone was pretty much settled and we went to sleep so no one really knows about the trash except for those who did it, and theyre not talkng. So back to when the cops were there. No one is charged with the trash but i am charged with petty theft for taking a CRAB POT!

Now in my defense i had no intent to deprive him of his property indefinatly, i didnt even know why it was in the garage but is seemed as if it hadnt been used for awhile, it seemed abandoned and i was gonna use it, hopefiully catch some crabs for the house and put the trap back, i live in Pa and wont need it!

How screwed am I? I have no priors, no criminal history, I'm a female graphic designer and always do right by everyone that i can and in a momentary lapse of good judgment i am facing big fines and even jail time! what should i do!?

What happened with the crabpot? Did the police take it? If not, did you return it when you were done with it?
