Question Should I Not Have Sent Letters to Stores

I was caught shoplifting a month ago and all my previous shoplifting sprees caught up with my conscious. I sent letter and money to large chain retail stores that I stole from. It was probably a lot of money. Like up to $300. I enclosed money with the apology letters.
I told some people about the letters and they told me I should not have done this because they can be used against me. Like, turning the letters over to the police or something like that. And the letter is me confessing that I'm guilty. I sent the letters anonymously by the way.

Have any of you ever heard of a retail store doing this?

How can they use the letters against you if you sent them anonymously?

    (1) What Missy said.

    (2) Don't tell anyone you sent the letters. Keep that to yourself. In this day and age, you never know who will try to screw you.
