Default Caught Shoplifting at Barnes & Noble

My question involves criminal law for the state of: North Carolina

I was caught shoplifting at Barnes and Noble, they kind of know me because I used to work there years ago. No police were involved and it only happened about a week ago. I haven't gone back since. The manager on duty and I knew each other by first names. He was acting really distant the day it happened.

Can they pull employee records from 2007? My address is the same but my phone number is different... Am I just going to get a summons in the mail or something because I expected the cops to show up at my house by now.

They took the product back but I never reentered the store with them, so I never signed anything or even talked with anyone since.
Before I actually left the store I heard someone yell "Oh they're trying again!" So I wonder if someone who looks like me was trying something, because that was the first time I had been there in 3 weeks.
Another weird happening is i've been hearing things from people who don't even know me asking if I got caught. So I don't know if they're fishing for information or expecting me to come back and face the judgment. I wasn't friends outside the store with anyone. I had kind of breathed a sigh of relief until random people started asking me stuff.

No police were involved.......good, at this point.

However.....the store can still turn over any surveillance tape and your address to the police, and file charges (aka, arrest, fingerprints, mugshots).

I would not risk it....stay out of ANY local B&N stores. And stop shoplifting. It is not worth it. Think: a book could cost you:
    - Civil Demand of atleast $200.
    - Court costs and fines of atleast $300.
    - Public Defender - atleast $200
    - Criminal Record that will haunt you for a few years.
    - Ban from any B&N Store - walk in, get arrested for Criminal Trespass if you are recognized.
    - If you have a newspaper that publishes arrest info....the joy of seeing your name and "Shoplifter" in the local paper.
    - The possibility of having to spend money on a public defender or a lawyer.

Yes....your item from B&N could cost you $2000.......

The store doesn't have any cctv, but I do wonder, since I worked there do they keep all that info on file.

I'm sure you hear this from everyone but I have definitely lost sleep over this and I am not willing to go even 100 yards near them.
This is by far the stupidest thing I never want to try again.

    Thanks Pandora

Your info is likely on file at Corporate. So yes, they could put in a request to get your address, etc.

They may have CCTV without you being aware of it. Not every place that does posts notices or even tells employees.

If they did install cctv it would have to have been recent. When I worked there I had a tendency to wander and search. No one noticed because I was usually with a manager.
I'm starting to feel really bad about betraying my old manager. But I don't want to go to jail if I can avoid it. I feel like if I go back it'll be like Link's Awakening where if you steal you're labeled thief and the guy kills you if you walk back in the store.
There's been a new store manager there since I left maybe she'll just let it go since they still have the books. Or maybe corporate will make it unnecessarily difficult to get my info since i'm fairly certain they only know my first name.
I won't really know until a year from now right?
