Default Avoiding a Criminal Record for Shoplifting

I am a junior in a nursing college in Nebraska. I have a 3.8GPA and have a full scholarship. In January of 2006 I did something really stupid. I shoplifted items worth less than $30 and got caught. I found myself a lawyer and will go to court on March 20, 2006. The lawyer said that most likely I will be convicted since I admitted to to it in front of the security guard and police officers. I don't want a criminal record. I am very sorry and ashamed and won't do this again, ever, but is there anything I can do to not have a criminal record or get an expungement?

    Default Retail Fraud in Nebraska

Talk to the lawyer about the possiblity of a diversion program or delayed disposition.

It appears that Nebraska permits a set-aside for people who are given a probationary sentence, which "nullifies" the conviction and removes all civil disabilities and disqualifications, but does not expunge or seal the criminal record for the offense.
