    Default Petty Theft Driver

My question involves civil rights in the State of: California
I was driving someone who had stolen beer in my car.
The cop pulled me over and I was given a petty theft ticket for under 50 dollars.
I didn't know he stole anything.
Am I guilty...the judge has lowered the case to an infraction already.
If I choose to plead not guilty instead of two classes and a fine, what is the worst that can happen and will I be presented with a public defender.
What do I need to tell the public defender and do you think it is possible to not get in trouble at all?

If you plead not guilty and to go trial, the worst that can happen is that you'll be convicted of a crime; or did you also mean in terms of sentencing, in which case the worst case would involve some time in jail.

You can check with the court to see if you're eligible for a court-appointed lawyer, and to get a petition form.
