Question Where and When Can I File For Divorce

My question involves divorce in the State of: Illinois or DC

I need some help understanding how to go about this:

My husband and I lived in DC. We then separated (not legally) for a year. At that time, I lived in a place that I own in Illinois, while he stayed in DC.

We tried to reconcile. I kept my residence in Illinois but physically went back to DC to see if we could work things out.

A month ago, we finally called it quits. I am now in NYC to start a graduate program, and he is in DC.

Where do we file? Can I file in Illinois, if I still own my home there but haven't been there for several months? Can I consider that my permanent residence and NY my partial-year residence?

I ask all of this because my soon-to-be ex will potentially be moving, too. I'm not sure that we'll actually be able to claim residency in DC anymore, and NY has a very long term residency requirement.

Thank you for any help on this.
