Default Criminal Trespassing - Can I Represent Myself

My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Jersey

A few of my friends and I were out playing guitars and hanging out at a private lake/watershed and were arrested for criminal trespassing. I have read differing accounts about whether or not these can be pleaded down. Although two of my friends were asked once to leave and did not, there was no disturbance of property, vandalism, or any type of damage down to the property. Also, I have seen that most prosecutors would wish to keep a few college kids records clean of criminal offenses in this case. Should I hire a lawyer to help me, or will I be able to plead these charges down myself? Also, is a court date mandatory?

When in doubt, consult a lawyer. You can probably get a free initial consultation.

Is your last question serious? You're charged with a crime. Of course you have to go to court.

Two of your friends were asked to leave, and didn't.

    Who asked? Property owner?

Why did they not leave upon request?

What part of PRIVATE Lake/Watershed was not understood?

It's best to hire a lawyer and they could probably arrange a plea to something like simple trespassing or disorderly conduct.A straight out dismal might not be possible but a lawyer would help improve your chances . Maybe there a diversion program or ask a lawyer what reduced charge can be expunged later. Some lawyers offer free consultations,it wouldn't hurt to call one or two up.
