Fence Problems in Los Angeles

My question involves real estate located in the State of: California

I just bought a house in Los Angeles. My neighbor bought his house at about the same time. Without my approval, and in fact, with my opposition in writing, he immediately put up a fence along one side of the property. This is, in my opinion, a very inappropriate fence. I feel it was done with hostility. It's a lattice fence, and I can see his trash behind it from my dining room window. Is there any law against my putting fence on my property that runs parallel to his fence so that I don't have to look at his fence and what's behind it?

Barring a restrictive covenant or local ordinance there is nothing preventing you from building a fence anywhere on your property.

I would be sure and get a building permit and check with your local homeowners association (or what ever entity is in charge of enforcement of possible restrictive covenants) before I started building the fence. I would also make sure the fence you build is entirely within your property. This can be achieved by having a survey performed or using an existing survey to locate where you will build your new fence.
