Default Rejected for Law License Due to Student Loan Debt

Here's an interesting article about some guy who passed the Bar exam, approved by the Bar Association, with praise, then rejected by the appellete court here in NY as unworthy because he's behind on $400,000 in student loans.

Wrong - without a doubt. I am not a lawyer, although I am studying to be a paralegal and this just doesn't seem right. If they let people through with an actual criminal history, it is WRONG to hold someone back for owing on the debt he took out to get there. Of course he won't be able to pay them back until he is able to work...unreal!

    absolutely proper.

being an lawyer means you are an officer of the court and as such, are expected to be held to high moral and ethical standards. Failing to make payment on such a loan does not bode well for his personal beliefs.

from the ruling denying the license:

“Applicant has not presently established the character and general fitness requisite for an attorney and counselor-at-law.”
    from another party:

“The size of this account is extremely unusual, but not surprising given that the customer took out 32 loans to pursue undergraduate, law and masters of law studies and has not made a single monthly payment over his 26-year student loan history,” Ms. Holler said.
Personally, I do not believe a person should be denied licensure merely for owing the debt but the underlying facts show something other than merely owing a debt. The new folks like to make a huge point of his struggles throughout his life but come on now, he is not the only guy to have such problems.

Yeah, I'm going to go with everyone else on this. He somehow made no payment, not even one, in 26 years of taking out loans? That's not the kind of financial responsibility one would want of a counselor to someone else. One would want a track record of, at the very, very least, an attempt at being a responsible adult.

How could someone get 32 loans, never make a monthly payment on any of them and do it for 26 yrs? What does it say about the loan officers from these institutions? There must be more to the story here.

The loans were to get through school so he gets a job to pay them back..however, it seems these loans are old and he has most likely been working over the last 20 years, so why hasn't he paid a cent. That does say a little about character. I think there is more to the story then whatthe public has been made aware of.
Oh goodness: not another law school loan repayment conspiracy theorist!
