Default Shoplifting from a Grocery Store

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois

Hello, I am extremely ashamed of myself. I have been caught stealing from a grocery store in my suburb and was thereafter approached by a theft prevention personnel from the store. The total of grievances added up to about $12. I am 19 years old. When they brought me up to the security room, I found my whole heart sinking and wishing that I never committed the act. The personnel just told me to fill out a form with my name, address, year of birth, etc. Will this appear on a permanent record when I apply for a part time job, and a career in the future? Please help me, I am extremely worried. I hope this is just a person to the store affair; the personnel gave me a warning and said the next time you'll end up in jail and "19 year olds do some pretty stupid things". In the end, I just filled out that form and paid for the merchandise. Please help, will this appear on my records? Will I be contacted by the police later?

If you are contacted by police and arrested, you should worry about a record. If you are not then all you might have earned yourself is a civil demand. Be on the look out for a letter that will ask for, who knows, maybe a couple hundred dollars. I suggest you pay the demand upon receipt. If you don't things could get nasty.

does an offense like this always prompt a civil demand? (i guess i'm assuming so because he asked for my information) this was my first time shoplifting and i was caught. it seemed like the personnel was letting me off with a warning, and i purchased everything in the end.

if i receive the civil demand, how quickly does it need to be payed for?

To answer your first question, I will pose a question. Why do you think they took down your name and address.

To answer your second question ~ I'd say it should be payed (sic) as soon as possible. The letter may give you a time frame.

first of all, i'm really grateful for your quick replies.

how much do you estimate the civil demand (in Illinois) will ask for if the damages equaled to $12? even though i paid for the damage in full, it will not effect the consequences of the civil demand, i'm guessing?

and after i have resolved the civil demand, will this at all effect me applying for a part time job down the line? will i have to list this information down on a resume/job application?

also, if i am compliant with the civil demand, paying it promptly, do i have to go to court?

You can't be criminally prosecuted for refusing to pay CIVIL demand.
