My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan
Today I was caught shoplifting at Meijers on a stupid dare I said yes to while I was intoxicated. I'm 23. I didn't actually leave to store with the items and all that was required was to show that I did it and I was going to return them.
I was stopped before leaving and taking to the LP office in back. I was told to get various items which totaled up to I believe $95. I told them everything. The complete truth. They had all the items, ( and the lady even kept my purse for herself, don't know if she can do that but I wasn't about to argue.) They gave me a letter of demand for civil damages and I'll get a letter for a court date in the mail. I only have to pay $200 dollars to Meijers. They didn't even call the cops. The guy was telling what to expect when I went to court because I've never done anything like this or been in trouble before but I was pretty scared so I don't remember half of what he said. I know he said something about probation and community service, some kind of service or class that I can take and then my record would be clean? But what else. I've been reading the other forums but non that I've read involved NON minors.
And information would be great.
Also I'm trying to do this myself without my parents knowing if that even possible. What are the chances that I'm going to go to jail? That and my record are what I'm very worried about.
Thank you.
