My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Hampshire
Good evening. Actually I'm asking this because I'm curious about it. I work in a retail establishment but I am also a Criminal Justice major. Today at work A suspicious character approached me (I work in the garden department) And wanted to know where I could find a grill. he had a Receipt for a grill. and showed me what it said on the receipt, he wanted that specific grill. so, it took me awhile to find it (As It was a Housewares grill) he then proceeded to take me and another associate around to "shop" for more items on a different receipt, a Hair cutting set, a razor, a hammock. at any rate, he was sketchy, he messed up his story several times (as i was with him for a good half hour, he said that the razor was for father's day, but it was a women's razor, and he said he was here doing things for his mom, and that he was with her, but, no mom met with him at any time) I got suspicious, so i followed him to the front and made sure he was checking out with the items he accumulated. And went to the service desk and alerted them about the man's suspicious behavior, pointing him out as he left with the items he PURCHASED (heres where it gets weird)
A different man came in to return the same items he just purchased. with the same receipts he showed me, I got called up to the security room to identify the person, an talked with the managers about it, explaining the situation and what I saw. the part about it that I dont get is that, he purchased the items and left the store, then sent someone back in five minutes later with the same items he had just purchased, with the same receipts he shopped around with me for, and kept his new receipt, it seems to me like the NEW receipt is the part that is essential to their plan.
So, I'm confused as to exactly what it is that they are trying to do. And would like to discuss RETURN FRAUD theories with you good lawful peoples, and discuss the possibilities of this scenario, and what could be done to stop the plan. Any thoughts...?
