My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Massachusetts
I was leaving the state for a new job two months before my lease ended. I told my landlord's management company. They asked for the keys back and INVITED me to use my security deposit (which blew my mind) to pay for June (as I told them I'd be leaving at the last day of May and I gave them only about two week's notice of this. So I thought my paying for June was completely fair).
So note that they accepted my keys and invited me to use my security for June. That to me spells "release from the lease."
However, the lease ends at the end of July. I took this acceptance of the keys and invitation to let my security take care of June, as release from the lease.
But now that they haven't found anyone to take the place on July 1, they want me to pay for July. (Incidentally I'm not surprised they've found no one. I've been keeping an eye on their internet ads and none of those for my old apt. include a photo, unlike just about every other ad).
I don't want to find myself in hot water, but they led me to believe I was out of the lease. It appears to me that they've let me out of this lease and cannot now change their mind.
Haven't they?
