My question involves criminal law for the state of: CA

Hi...I have a general question. Recently I was caught shoplifting by my employer (I worked at a music retail chain) and I stole about $350 worth of merchandise. When I was confronted by the managers and owner, the police were not called and I went home and came back to return all the merchandise I had stolen. Needless to say I am very regretful that this happened..but my question is this: what is the likelyhood that they will press charges? If so, what kind of penalties should I expect? This is a first time offense and will a judge look kindly upon the fact that I tried to redeem myself by returning everything? Lastly, will this show up on my permanent record?

I am very worried about how this is this going to affect me as I'm looking for future employment. I don't have the funds to hire an attorney and I'm also wondering if the store can demand that I pay even though I returned all the merchandise. I have no intention of returning to retail but if a future employer runs a background check, could this affect securing a future job?

Thanks so much...
