My question involves unemployment benefits for the state of: California
I wrote for a popular freelancing site. I did not fill out a W9 form because I didn't expect to make over $600. I worked for the site for two and a half months and last week, they said they no longer needed my writing for stupid reasons and now, they are asking me to fill out a W9 form. The problem is that I have been on unemployment since April. I have not reported any money earned from this site to unemployment. If they find out that I earned this money over the past few months, I will likely be penalized and won't be able to collect unemployment insurance, which I really need.
How should I handle this? Should I refuse to fill out the W9 form? If I don't fill it out, they can't report the money I earned, correct? Or if I do fill out the W9 form, how do they report my earnings? Do they just report my earnings at the end of the year? If so, that's okay. But if they report my earnings during the months I earned unemployment, I'm screwed. I'm really worried about this and I hope someone can give me advice.
