My question involves a roommate in the State of: California
I am currently living in a household where none of the housemates is actually listed on the lease, the "head of household" referred to a grandfather clause upon when I moved in.
In contrary to that person's initial talk now asks me to pay rent for my last month that I am staying there. When I met them for the first time several months ago I was told that due to the previous occupant not paying rent and leaving without notice a last month rent would be due when I move in.
Now I was told that this is a security deposit and not last months rent.
We have nothing in writing about it but my partner was there on the day I heard the story and agreed to move in.
Can a person who's not even on the lease ask me to pay for a security deposit in the first place?
Also, if I don't want to pay for my rent of the last month, I was asked to leave bye the 1st - is that legal?
Thanx for any information to be considered in this situation
