Arrested for Tag Switching in Sears

My question involves criminal law for the state of: TX
I was picked up and caught on camera tag switching. Its a Class A misdemeanor here in Texas, the name has something with Fraud in it. I was booked into jail, released on bond.

Im 21, I go to a good school, first time offense. Im wondering what to expect?

The term is likely "Retail Fraud". Even though you "paid" for AN item, you paid the cost for a different item, intentionally.

Basically, it is the same as shoplifting.

You can expect a Civil Demand notice (pay it immediately), court fines.

You can have a consultation with a Criminal Defense lawyer, many offer free consultations.

If you don't have a lawyer, then at your arraignment you will want to plea "Not Guilty" or "I Stand Mute" and ask for a Public Defender. You will have to prove your financial situation for one. Also, contrary to popular belief, they are NOT free, and will cost atleast $200 dollars.

By pleading "Not Guilty" or "I Stand Mute" this gives you a chance at a Plea Deal, aka as a Lesser Charge.
