So when exactly did it become law that a parent can't tell a child what they are going to do. I don't ASK my kids to do anything. Anything I tell them to do, I expect them to light a fire up under their behind and do it the minute I say do it, unless I said do it at another time... including you need to pay rent. Not, "you think it's ok if you pay a little rent here?"

She did not say he was "asking", she said he IS charging him rent money.
The point of distinction being what?

They can do things like limit him to the bare minimum that the law says they have to afford him. A roof over his head, heat, the most basic of all meals (rice, beans, water, ramen noodles) and clothing. Not nice clothing either. Weather appropriate, cheap, plain clothing/shoes. No use/access to the household telephone, no cell phone. No use/access to the computer, video games, etc.

Sounds more like retaliation instead of a lesson in life!

It absolutely is a lesson. Those things cost money. If you don't have the money, then you have to learn to live without them because there is no one in this world that is ENTITLED to those things.

It costs me as a parent to provide them so that I can benefit from them. If you want to use them, then you pay for them as well. See, here's the lesson. Nothing in life is free. I'm not going to jail for failure to provide you with the latest Nike. You can wear Walmart because that's all I'm required to provide you. Then, if you want better, YOU pay for it.

I know, I'm mean. However, my oldest son makes 75k/yr., and owes no one. He's responsible and self supporting all by learning those lessons.

That's all fine and dandy, but when YOU are unable to provide for yourself, and the children refuse to help you, maybe they will say you should have taken better care of yourself in life??

So, you're supposed to cowtow to your kids in hopes that one day they'll take care of you? Be careful never to piss off your kids because one day, you'll get old and they may not take care of you?

Sorry, my kids and I don't have that kind of relationship because I forced them to be responsible. Not even close - and as I have taught them financial responsibility, I have been financially responsible as well anyway. However, I'm not going to live my life and abdicate my parental responsibility to turn out well rounded, responsible, respectful children in hopes that one day when I'm 90, they'll take care of me. I may outlive my kids (hopefully not, but I may), especially since one is in law enforcement. They'll take care of me because they love and respect me, not because I gave them everything they wanted.

I've never understood this line of thought.

I didn't have kids so I'd have someone to take care of me when I'm old. I had them to enjoy NOW.

I think people who expect their kids to care for them when they're old are the worst kind of selfish.

First, it was not a direct attack on you personally, YOU was meant more as a general you.

Point being, no, you should not patronize people just because you may need them one day. I am saying IF you are a parent who just does things out of spite, don't be surprised if you get the same.

It still sounds like retaliation, per the poster.
