My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois
I was stopped for a shoplifting incident at the local grocery store. I was taken to a back room, asked to empty my bag, returned the items, questioned, and then asked for my State ID. I gave security my ID and he wrote down my name & address then gave me a piece of paper, stating that I would be recieving a civil demand in a few weeks. No police were called, I didn't sign an admission of guilt, and I wasn't banned from the store.
My question(s) are:
1. How long does it take for the demand to arrive? (I really just want to pay it and more forward with my life.)
2. How much will the demand be? (The items equaled up to under $10. About 6.00+ to be excat.)
3. What are the chances of this becoming a court case, even if I do pay the full demand, on time? (The store doesn't usually take action against people who don't pay so will they come after someone who will?)
4. What happens after the demand is paid and their yr. to take action has expired? Should I still worry?
This is my first and last time ever doing something this dumb. I just want it all to be over with as soon as possible. I'm 18 and don't want something like this to follow me for the rest of my life.![]()
