Default Shoplifting, First Offense, in Michigan

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan

Ok, this sounds stupid to some, and serious to others, but my friend and I got caught shoplifting together. I personally was stealing 2 granola bars, and my friends was stealing a mouse for a computer. We were caught, yadda yadda and send via mail a note saying that we need to go be interviewed to see if we qualify for some voluntary probation program. Is this the only thing we are doing is voluntary probation? its been 3 months and those are the only papers we have recieved. ALso, what is this interview about? Is it to make sure that we're not hardcore criminals and see if they want to accept us or not? or is this something where if they see my empty backround and that fact that I have worked 2 jobs for quite some time and done well in school, they may drop the charges and send me home?

    Idk how this works?

P.s., I'm a 17 year old and from Michigan. I'm not sure if either of those will help in your answer

At this point, I would talk to your parents (if you have not already). You are likely going to be lucky and get something like Community Service. Complete it and the record is sealed.

Talking to a Criminal Defense Lawyer may also be a smart move. He might be able to get a Diversion Program for you - in other words, community service, a "Do not shoplift" class.....and lesser charge.

ok. Ya ike I said I have a voluntary probation interview tomorrow so I hope all that goes well. Btw, Is this going to be off my record COMPLETLY? like if jobs do backround checks and stuff they won't find it?

I would ask a lawyer about that. Or after the case is closed, go view your record at your local courthouse.

Juvenile criminal records are sealed when you reach the age of majority anyway (when you turn 18).
    Not always.

Here in Florida, we have a program for first time teen offenders called "teen court." The jury is made up of teens who have also broken the law. You have a "trial" in front of the court (which has an attorney as the "judge") and are sentenced according to the wishes of the teen jury. The usual sentence is like this:

1 community service, usually 20-80 hours
    2 a small fine
3 write a letter of apology, to be read in teen court at your final hearing
4 When you have completed the above, you will then have to serve on the teen jury a few times
5 after all of this is complete, the case is dropped, and since you were never convicted, it is as if this never happened (pre-trial diversion)
