    Default Child Support and Credit

When my parents divorced, one of the terms of the child support was that my father would pay any and all medical bills.

However, he didn't, and some of these bills went to collection. I now have $700 in unpaid medical bills on MY credit report- the bills went on my credit report even though he didn't pay them.

I am now 22 and considered an adult. The child support and benefits have stopped. But I still have this $700 worth of medical bills on my credit report. I called the Department of Social Services, and they say that I can't do anything about it unless my mother chooses to reopen the case, as she was the one who started the whole case when my parents were divorced. My mother says she would rather not get the whole thing started again, it would cost too much to hire a lawyer, yadda yadda.

So what should I do? Suck it up and pay it against the principle of the thing?

    Thanks in advance!

You appear to be stuck - that is, your mother won't pay the bills herself, and won't go after your father to pay them. If they won't pay, and you don't have a legal basis to enforce the support order yourself (as a nonparty to the divorce), the bills will continue to sit unpaid. Your parents may have a duty to pay the bills if they were incurred while you were a minor, depending upon where you live, but if they don't do so voluntarily even then you would have to sue them. And otherwise, you seem to be left with paying the bills yourself. They're not leaving you with any good options.
