Default Speeding Ticket in Washington, King County

My question involves a speeding ticket from the State of: Washington.

Situation - I was driving on I-5 with my sister in law sitting right next to me. I got a 90 mph speeding ticket (speed limit was 60). Fine was $247 for the speeding part. I did not have proof of insurance at the time of the infraction as I forgot my insurance card at home. Fine was $550.

I used my deferral in Washington state in 2007 (in a different county, if that matters).

My question is what should I do? I plan to attend a mitigation hearing and I will provide proof of insurance so I am confident that the insurance fine ($550 can be waived completely) but I am not sure what to do about the speeding part.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You will probably still have to pay a $25 fee when you present you insurance card. You might want to check with the Clerk of the Court. Some jurisdictions actually require that your insurance company issue a letter on letterhead stating that your policy was, in fact, active at the time.

As far as the speeding ticket, I would go through the standard procedure for contesting it. Send in the ticket (make a copy), request discovery, check the radar calibration, and so on. See if there are any flaws that might lead to a dismissal. If not, change your plea to "mitigation" and try to get the fine reduced, since you're not eligible for a deferral.

There are plenty of threads here outlining the details.

    Hi Barry,

Can you please send me a copy of the discovery form to kityu03@gmail.com

Also, my question is if I received the ticket on 5/27 and assume that I send my discovery request this week before 6/5, do I have enough time to decide if I should contest the ticket or attend a mitigation hearing to reduce the fine?

    I got a speeding ticket going 90 MPH on a 60 zone.

Thank you so much for your help.
