    Default Safe Drinking Water

    Hello,

The water source for our old home near a mill is a well. We have repeatedly asked the landlord, in writing, for a copy of the arsenic test he said he ran, with what he said were "acceptable" results. He first ignored our requests, and then verbally refused to supply a copy, and followed that by saying that the water had tested high for arsenic, and he would be installing a reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink.

That was a month ago. In the meantime, our $70 10-stage water filter that is supposed to last for 2 years has clogged and needed to be replaced after only 4 months, because there's no house filter on the well water coming into the house. We also have a filter on the shower.

What is the landlord's responsibility here? What rights do we have? How can we get him to provide safe drinking water without running the risk of having him raise the rent or otherwise make life miserable for us?

There are other things this landlord should do - like remove not garbage, but trash/large debris from the property - but the drinking water is our priority. Advice on the debris removal would be appreciated as well.

We wonder how anybody could knowingly allow a tenant to be consuming poisoned water (he didn't know about our filter)...

"How can we get him to provide safe drinking water without running the risk of having him raise the rent or otherwise make life miserable for us?" - The landlord can always find a way to make your life miserable.

Is there a local unit of government that does safety inspections on rented housing? If so, consider seeing if they'll investigate the problem.
