My question involves defamation in the state of: Nevada
Let me first say, my landlord and I do not have a good relationship. We ran into problems when I was without heat for 3 days in the middle of winter, when it took 2.5 weeks to fix a broken washer/dryer, ect.
I have been renting with my landlord for about 5 months now. I signed a year lease, but will be relocating due to a new job. My landlord has agreed to let me terminate the lease if I find a new tenant. I've found a prospective one and they've submitted their application and fee, so I applied for housing at another location where I'm moving as I'll need to be out quickly if this person gets accepted for the house. I have had every intention to continue paying the rent until the house gets rerented as we agree and have done so accordingly.
The new complex I've applied at checked my rental history with my current landlord and the landlord faxed back a letter that said I haven't abided by my lease terms with them (in attempts to make it more difficult for me to rent elsewhere due to our bad relationship). I've paid my rent on time/early every month and I'm paid through the end of this month (May). I haven't done anything to violate the lease here, yet they said this.
I am pretty sure this is slander. They have caused me harm in wrongfully ruining my reputation with the new complex - even if they still rent to me (I'm not sure if they will yet).
Do you think I have a legal case against them? Or is it even worth pursuing?
