My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Jersey
I got caught shoplifting at Macy’s in New Jersey a week ago. I’ve been on this forum reading up on other people’s experiences with getting caught shoplifting and have heard a lot about paying a Civil Demand. I was wondering if I would be getting a letter in the mail for one too. I think the LP tried to explain in to me while I was there, but, I hadn’t been paying much attention, because I was too busy worrying about what was going to happen next. What he had told me was something along the lines of I could either pay now or pay later, either way I’d have to pay. I opted to pay for the items I stole now. So I had paid the $83.00 for the necklaces I stole, I even have them in a bag with a receipt at home. I was wondering if I still had to pay civil demands after that or if that was it? I would just like to know what to expect. Does anybody know if I would be hearing from Macy’s again, asking for more money? Thank you very much.
