Default Why a Grand Jury for Preliminary Hearing

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois

Hi, my friend and her husband were both charged with a class 3 felony, it was a white collar crime. they were being investigated by the county sheriffs dept for 3 months until they got arrested. The DA wants a grand jury for the preliminary hearing. They can not afford an attorney and used the PD, so they didn't really get to talk to the PD very much about it.

Does this mean the case is worse than she thinks since they want a grand jury?

What makes the court want a grand jury instead of just having a regular prelim with the judge?

Also, can more charges be added after the indictment?

It was her first arrest, her husband has 1 misdimeanor on his record. She is out on an I-bond, and he is out on a 10,000-D bond.

I've been trying to find information online, but am not really finding what I'm looking for. Thanks so much for any answers you can supply me with.
