    Default Changing My Locks

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of Georgia

I've repeatedly asked my landlord not to enter my unit without notification, but he does it anyway. I'm leaving the place in 60 days, and I know that he's going to try walking in here with new prospective tenants. I work in this space and don't want to be disturbed without warning. In addition this landlord has shown disregard for my property - shrugging off responsibility for an item his painters ruined.

So, I'm thinking about changing the locks for the duration, and not handing over the keys until I leave.

    Is this OK?

You should check your lease to see if there are any provisions related to the landlord's right to show the apartment.

Is is illegal to change your locks without providing a key to the landlord. Georgia law requires the landlord to have a key to all of his/her properties for emergency purposes.

There is nothing in my lease about showing the place.

Is it really illegal? I just found this in the Georgia Landlord Tenant Handbook online:

"Unless the lease prohibits the tenant from changing the locks without permission, the tenant is permitted to do so. Unless the lease states that the tenant must give the landlord a key, the tenant is not obligated to do so. When the tenant vacates the premises, the tenant either has to turn over the new keys or restore the lock box to its original condition and return the appropriate keys. If the tenant neither turns over the keys nor restores the lock, the landlord may deduct the cost of replacing the lock from the security deposit and notify the tenant that this deduction will be made."

Do you know have reason to believe the law has changed?
