Default Am I Required to Continue Paying My Mortgage

My question involves real estate located in the State of: Maryland

I bought a home in April of 2006 and later refinanced that November with the same settlement company. My loan/purchase/deed was never recorded and the city of Baltimore does not recognize me as the owner of the property. My mortgage company has been of no assistance and I no longer wish to have the home. Can I just stop paying the mortgage, as they have no proof (secured interest) in the property?

You signed the mortgage contract. You owe the money you borrowed.
