    Unhappy Attempted Shoplifting in California

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California.

I was being stupid the other day and tried to steal something from Best Buy. I cut open a box and removed the item, but noticed a Loss Prevention Officer watching me. I immediately put down the item and left the store. The Loss Prevention Officer did not approach me but when I left the store he stood outside and wrote down my license plate number.

Would I face prosecution either for attempting to steal the item, or for "damaging" the item by cutting open the box? I am an adult and the value of the item was approximately $200.
