My question involves criminal law for the state of: NJ
A couple of months ago, I almost took something from a department store. It was dumb and stupid, and I realized a) I didn't want to do this and b) I was being followed by plainclothes. I walked around for a bit, and then dropped the item off in another dressing room. To top things off, I had a bag of valid returns with me from other stores, and the bag ripped by the department store exit - thus it was obvious I had returned the merchandise.
I went to another department store and made a return, thus had anyone followed me throughout the mall, I'm assuming they could have gotten my information from the second department store. As I said, it's been several months, and I haven't received any summons/etc.
However, I had to return something from the first department store today. I went in, made the return, did a little window shopping about the mall, and left. NO SHOPLIFTING.
Then I got all freaked out b/c apparently there had been an incident right before I walked into a store b/c the police were walking out, and I saw plainclothes all over the mall, and when I left, there were two screaming cop cars pulling up. So I hope I'm overreacting, but can one still be arrested/convicted/etc. for not shoplifting months after the fact? Is camera survellience that detailed that they could recognize me in spring clothes, when last time I was in a baseball cap and winter jacket?
Any advice is appreciated!
