Angry Outstanding Medical Bill in Illinois

My question involves an outstanding medical bill in the State of Illinois. My husband has an outstanding medical bill from 2006, with a balance of $5,000. The bill is current, I have never missed a month of sending them a minimum payment. They are now threatening that if we don't send a larger payment amount every month that it will be sent to collections. Can they do this? We cannot afford the monthly payment that they are requesting & have good credit & would like to keep it that way! I have already called the clinic & they are not budging! Any suggestions? I've always heard that if you are making a consistant monthly payment that they couldn't send it to collections? I'm stressed .....

A little trick I learned when dealing with this sort of thing is let it get sent to the collection agency if the company isnt willing to set up payments. The collection agencies want your money and will be more inclined to accept a payment arrangment.

How negative would the impact on our credit score be letting it go to collections? Any opinion positive or negative about those "debt consolidation" companies? Thx so much!

Usually the transition to the collection agency doesn't take that much time and the collection agency( depending on who they are) will set up a payment plan. As long as you keep paying you shouldn't have an impact and debt consolidation is a big scam in my opinion and so is all of this. This is just what i do not saying it will work for everyone but when I get a stickler company.

Personally, I would try to avoid having it go to collections. If you have good credit, it will hurt and it will most likely take 7 years to get it off your report.

You mentioned that you have been making the minimum payment every month. How was that determined? If they agreed to a monthly amount and you have been meeting it, I would say the can't send it to collections if it is in writing. If they agreed to it verbally, they would be in violation but how can you prove it?

If they agreed to a set amount per month and you have been meeting it, I would take it up the chain of command.
