    Default Emancipated at 18

My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Missouri

Can I be emancipated at 18 without parental consent? I realize that at 18 I am no longer under legal ownership of my parents; however, my parents want to go to court and claim that I am "unfit to care for myself" and therefore continue ownership of me after I'm 18. First of all, can they do this? Second of all, how do I act before they act WITHOUT their consent? Does this require actual emancipation, since I'll no longer be a minor?

So, why do your parents want to do this?

There's no law that says they can't, if that is your question.

For the past several years we've seen several doctors and therapists but I have yet to be successfully "cured." They claim that my being negligent and having what they call "distorted views of reality" are grounds to keep me under their control so that they can continue to attempt to fix me. I have stated that I have no intention of continuing to see therapists after I'm 18 (which will be in about 2 months), as I will no longer HAVE to under their rule. Basically, they want to prevent that. Granted, at this point I haven't proven that I have the ability to make it on my own (no job yet), but I feel it's ridiculous that they have this assumption that if they don't "keep me" I'm going to fail in life. I'm right now looking for a job so I can save up to move into a nearby apartment with a friend after I'm 18. I don't intend to pursue their attempt to "fix myself," but I do not understand WHY this means that I am a DANGER to myself, as my parents have told me.

    My questions are basically:

1.) Can they do this after I'm 18?
2.) Do they need a sufficient reason, and what could that be?
3.) Can I override this OR can I act before they act and make sure they can't do this?
