I'm hoping for some help on this. Any advice would be appreciated.
I had an outpatient medical procedure back in 2002, almost 4 years ago. I paid my co-pay and left the rest to the insurance company. I never gave it a second thought until last month when I got a call from a collections agency. I was told that I owed over $400.
I'm not exactly sure what to do. I never received a single bill from the hospital at which the procedure what performed. I have not moved and my address has not changed so there was no reason for the hospital not to be able to contact me themselves if this was an issue. Now, almost four years later, the collection agency is telling me I owe several hundred dollars. I switched insurers about 3 years ago so I don't even know if they'd bother to help.
If I never received a bill from the hospital itself, is it legal for them to refer me to a collections agency? Is it legal to do so this long after the procedure? Is my old health insurer obligated to assist me with documentation or payment despite that I am no longer with them?
